Speaking at an IAES Graduation Dinner, EAA Patron and Former Prime Minister, The Hon Bob Hawke AC reflected on what the IAES Program has meant to him over the years. He told his audience that it has been one of the most treasured endeavours that he has been involved with during his long public life and paid tribute to the spirit and determination of the founder of EAA, engineer Jeff Dobell whose vision was that Indigenous Engineers would play a key role in the building of this nation.

‘There remain key social challenges facing Indigenous communities and while more Indigenous people are entering the professions, we know there is still an under-representation in professions such as Engineering.

For too long Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have been disadvantaged in the areas of health, housing, education and the legal system.

Projects such as the Indigenous Australian Engineering Schools are actively working to correct this disadvantage through demonstrating career paths open to Indigenous students’.
